Preparations for the Tournaments

If you have been to one of these events you may well have spent all day from 10am til 5 or even 6pm at a historical site enjoying a summer's day and being entertained and educated about our past. Every wondered what happens before and after the event?

Note we don't bring the lawn mower:0)

These photos were taken during the packing for the Framlingham Castle Tourney in mid August. As you can see there is quite a lot of kit. This takes an awful lot of packing, shifting and shunting, not to mention how much time goes into setting up the Living History Camp.

It's no wonder we all keep our fingers crossed that this lot gets to come down dry each Sunday night.

Fighting in a tournament is not easy. All combat is non scripted and un-choreographed and can be quite dangerous. Last year the knights who took part suffered a number of injuries; there was a broken thumb, a dislocated shoulder, a fractured elbow and a remodeled (broken) nose. And these are Tornaments A Plaisance (French for not trying to kill each other)

The risk is REAL. So we have managed to do some training. This page will have some photos of us training and some of the other preparations made.

The tourney kit has been made new for this season. Here are some of the 'heaters' that will be used for the club melees. The paint jobs were a team effort, I painted lots then took photos of Bess ( Heidi, my wife) Squire Ted and his girlfriend Amber. Well done guys!
Meanwhile Jon T our armourer has made the mounts for the Dragon crests for the Crest Melee and sewn 10 leather club heads together. They will appear here soon.
